AWS D14.1 vs. AWS D1.1 – What’s the Difference?
| Feature | AWS D1.1 | AWS D14.1 | |---------|----------|------------| | Primary focus | Building structures (beams, columns, bridges) | Cranes & material handling | | Fatigue detail | Limited tables | Extensive, design-oriented | | Dynamic loads | Not primary | Central requirement | | Inspection frequency | Static/cyclic mix | Higher for critical lift paths |
If you’re welding a crane runway beam inside a building, D1.1 may suffice. But if you’re welding the crane itself – the bridge, trolley, or hoist flange – you need D14.1.
3.2 Joint Details
- Complete Joint Penetration (CJP): Required for critical tension members and main load-carrying members where fatigue is a concern.
- Partial Joint Penetration (PJP): Allowed in compression members and specific shear applications, provided adequate throat thickness is maintained.
- Fillet Welds: The code specifies minimum and maximum weld sizes relative to the base material thickness to prevent distortion and ensure adequate strength.
