Sinopsis Lengkap: Mimpi Seorang "Si Gundul" Bernama Aikawa Mito

Cerita dimulai dengan Aikawa Mito, seorang siswa SMA yang biasa-biasa saja. Secara fisik, dia tidak istimewa: postur tubuh pendek dan rambut botak (gundul) khas anak berandalan ringan. Namun di balik penampilannya yang kumal, Mito memiliki kelincahan luar biasa dan rasa haus akan kemenangan.

Berbeda dengan Slam Dunk yang mengambil setting di lapangan sekolah resmi, Harlem Beat mengambil sudut pandang basket jalanan (streetball). Mito memulai kariernya dari lapangan aspal bernama "Harlem Court"—sebuah tempat legendaris di kotanya tempat para pemain underground berkumpul.

Keunikan yang Membedakannya dari Slam Dunk

Wajar jika Harlem Beat selalu dibandingkan dengan Slam Dunk. Tapi, jangan salah. Ada beberapa elemen yang membuat manga ini berdiri sendiri:

Fokus pada Street Basketball: Jika Slam Dunk sangat kaku dengan peraturan resmi dan strategi NBA, Harlem Beat lebih liar. Karakternya bermain streetball penuh crossover mematikan, behind-the-back pass, dan ankle breaker. Nuansa lapangan aspal dan kompetisi tidak resmi terasa dominan di awal cerita.
Stylistik 90-an yang Kental: Fashion karakter, rambut panjang khas visual kei, serta budaya hangout di arcade membuat komik ini terasa seperti kapsul waktu yang menyenangkan.
Perkembangan Karakter yang Realistis: Kiyohari tidak langsung jago. Ia sering jatuh, kalah, dan frustrasi. Yang membedakannya adalah grit (ketekunan). Ia mulai dari nol, dan setiap power-up yang ia dapatkan terasa earned, bukan given.
