Getting " Cakewalk by BandLab " activated—or rather, its successor—is a bit different than it used to be. As of December 31, 2025, the original " Cakewalk by BandLab
" version was officially sunsetted and is no longer supported or operational for activation.
The baton has been passed to Cakewalk Sonar, which is the new home for this legendary DAW. Here is your guide to getting it up and running in the current landscape. 1. The "New" Way: Activating Cakewalk Sonar
Since the old free version is no longer activatable, your best path forward is the Cakewalk Sonar Free Tier. It gives you full access to the core features of the pro software with very few limitations.

The In-App Handshake: Once you install and open the software, go to File > Browse BandLab Projects. Log in to your account there; a "successfully signed in" message usually triggers the background activation. 2. Troubleshooting Activation Errors
If the software won't validate your membership, it's usually a communication breakdown between your PC and BandLab. Check these common culprits:
System Clock: If your computer's date and time are even slightly off, security certificates may fail, blocking activation.

After activation, you can work offline for about 30 days before needing to reconnect.
