Bonelab — Sideload

Here’s a technical write-up on sideloading in BoneLab, aimed at users familiar with VR modding or Quest advanced features.

Best practices & safety tips

  • Only download mods from reputable sources and check comments/ratings.
  • Avoid running unknown .exe files; prefer mods that are plain assets or .dlls from trusted creators.
  • Keep a simple backup schedule: zip the game folder before major mod installs.
  • Use a mod manager or loader when available — easier to enable/disable and reduces breakage.
  • Keep mods updated and uninstall mods before updating the base game if advised by the mod author.
  • For multiplayer: only use mods allowed by server rules; mismatched mods can cause connection issues or bans.

Developer Account:

Meta requires you to enable Developer Mode. Here’s how: bonelab sideload

  1. Go to dashboard.oculus.com.
  2. Create a "Organization" (you can name it anything, e.g., "MyBonelabMods").
  3. On your phone’s Meta Quest app, go to Devices → Headset Settings → Developer Mode → Toggle ON.
  4. Restart your headset.

Setup Pain (3/10 difficulty after you learn)

You’ll need:

  1. A PC (Windows/Mac/Linux) or Android phone.
  2. SideQuest (easiest) or adb commands.
  3. Developer mode enabled on your Quest (Meta account → organization → enable USB debugging).
  4. A USB-C cable.

First-time setup takes ~20 minutes and feels scary if you’ve never sideloaded. But once dev mode is on, you never touch it again. Here’s a technical write-up on sideloading in BoneLab
