Hflashplayer.exe — Overview and Analysis

Phase 3: Clean Your Browsers

Hflashplayer.exe often installs browser extensions or changes settings. Reset each browser:

  • Chrome/Edge (Chromium): Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults.
  • Firefox: Help → Troubleshooting Information → Refresh Firefox.
  • Remove unknown extensions manually first.

What Exactly Is Hflashplayer.exe?

At first glance, the name "Hflashplayer.exe" suggests a connection to Adobe Flash Player. However, Adobe officially discontinued Flash Player on December 31, 2020, and began blocking Flash content from running in January 2021. Any legitimate Flash-related processes should no longer be active on a modern, updated Windows system.

The short answer: Hflashplayer.exe is not a legitimate Windows system file. It is almost universally classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or, in many cases, a direct trojan virus.

Security researchers have linked Hflashplayer.exe to several types of malware families, including:

  • Coin miners (cryptojackers) that use your GPU/CPU to mine cryptocurrency.
  • Adware that injects unwanted ads into your browser.
  • Trojan downloaders that fetch additional malware onto your PC.

Step 2: Uninstall Suspicious Programs

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Sort the list by "Installation Date."
  3. Look for programs installed recently that you do not recognize or that look suspicious (often with names like "Flash Player Pro," "Youtube Downloader," or random strings of letters).
  4. Right-click and uninstall them.

Step 2: Boot into Safe Mode

  • Restart your PC.
  • Press F8 (or Shift + Restart) to access Advanced Startup Options.
  • Select Safe Mode with Networking (so you can download removal tools).
