Kumon G1 Answer Book — Reading: Content Outline & Sample Explanations

1. Ask the Kumon Instructor Directly

Kumon instructors are required to hold "grading sessions." Ask if you can sit with the instructor for 15 minutes to go over the specific G1 questions your child missed. Many instructors will explain the answer reasoning to you (the parent) so you can reinforce it at home.

The Cons

1. The Temptation of the "Answer Key" The biggest downside is the risk of misuse. Because the answers are all right there, it is very tempting for a struggling student (or a frustrated parent) to peek at the answer to "get it over with." This defeats the purpose of the Kumon method, which is self-learning through trial and error. You must keep this book physically separated from the student.

2. It Doesn't Explain the "Why" This is a strictly binary tool: it tells you the Right Answer, but it does not explain why it is the right answer. If your child is confused about why a specific vowel sound changes a word's meaning, this book will not help you teach them. You will still need to understand the phonics rules yourself to guide them. kumon g1 answer book reading

3. Physical Durability Kumon answer books are typically soft-cover, flimsy paper booklets. For something that gets handled daily, they can tear easily. Laminating the cover or keeping it in a folder is recommended.

4. Example Without Giving Exact Answers

If a G1 passage describes a character who fails a test because she stayed up late watching TV, a question might ask: Kumon G1 Answer Book — Reading: Content Outline

Why did the character fail the test?

❌ Wrong answer: “She didn’t study.”
✅ Correct reasoning: “She stayed up late watching TV, so she was tired and couldn’t focus.” Why did the character fail the test

That’s an inference + cause/effect.
