If you have spent any time in architectural visualization or product rendering, you know the drill: You spend hours modeling the perfect scene, dial in the lighting, hit render, and then realize your materials look flat. You then fall down a rabbit hole of adjusting reflection glossiness, IOR levels, and bump maps.
That is where the V-Ray 6 Material Library changes the game.
With the release of V-Ray 6 (for 3ds Max, SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, and Cinema 4D), Chaos has overhauled its asset system. It is no longer just a folder of dull presets; it is a dynamic, cloud-synced, high-fidelity database of over 500+ photo-realistic materials.
In this guide, we will explore everything you need to know about the V-Ray 6 Material Library: What’s new, how to navigate the Cosmos browser, how to import assets, and pro tips for customizing the library to fit your workflow.

.tiled textures (TX maps) by default. This reduces GPU memory usage by ~50% compared to standard JPG/PNG textures.View-Dependent displacement for close-ups, and Bump only for background objects. If you are still using V-Ray 5 or building materials from scratch for every doorknob, you are working too hard. The V-Ray 6 Material Library bridges the gap between "stock photo" and "custom shader."
It gives you 90% of the way there in 10% of the time, allowing you to spend your creative energy on lighting, composition, and storytelling.
Ready to upgrade?
Fire up V-Ray 6, open the Asset Browser (search: Assets > Browser), and search for "Velvet" or "Weathered Zinc." You’ll be amazed at what comes out of the box.

V-Ray 6 introduces the V-Ray Material (Legacy) and V-Ray Material (Physical) . The 2024/2025 library updates now include materials using the Physical model.
Fresnel IOR instead of Reflectivity, it’s a Physical material. If you have spent hours tweaking reflection glossiness, hunting for missing bitmaps, or wrestling with RGB values to get that "perfect" mossy brick, you know the struggle. Time is money, and realism is the currency.
With the release of V-Ray 6, Chaos has fundamentally upgraded the game. The new V-Ray Material Library isn’t just a folder of old presets; it is a living, cloud-synced ecosystem designed to make you faster and your renders sharper.

With V-Ray 6, Chaos has hinted that the "Material Library" as a standalone entity may eventually merge entirely into Chaos Cosmos.
Currently, Chaos Cosmos gives you assets (chairs, trees, lights). In the future, updates to the V-Ray 6 Material Library will likely become dynamic. Prediction: You will eventually be able to rate materials, share custom libraries via the cloud, and get AI-generated texture variations based on the library's base maps.
For now, ensure your Chaos account is active. If you are using a legacy perpetual license (V-Ray 5 old version), you do not have access to the V-Ray 6 library. You need an active subscription or upgrade.
